PARKINSON'S DISEASE FITNESS SOLUTIONS

We realize that there are situations that require a specialized approach to fitness. We are also very aware that of the estimated one million Americans currently living with Parkinson's disease (PD), many are in our own communities. Although there are unique challenges that are associated with the condition, we have found that our setting, training, and expertise works well for PWP (People With Parkinson's) to establish and maintain a fitness routine for as long as possible, which has been clinically proven to slow the progression of the disease.

At Fitness Together our goal for every client is to live their most active lifestyle. With PD clients, this takes on an even more important role in their lives, as we are working together to maintain their movement and cognitive abilities for as long as possible - throughout the needs for each stage of the disease. With the knowledge that active fitness can potentially reduce cognitive decline and the onset of dementia, increase life expectancy, and improve the overall quality of life, we take our role as a part of your Parkinson's Wellness Team very seriously.

Our studios are designed to ensure our client's privacy and safety. There are no distractions or unexpected movements in the training suite which reduces anxiety and sensory overload. Because it is just the client and the trainer, some of the inherent risks associated with Parkinson's are drastically reduced, as we provide undivided attention on each movement.

Our specialized team is trained to customize fitness programs that are focused on each individual's goals and consult with the client to understand any special needs, especially their PD related symptoms and how they impact their aerobic, strength, balance, and flexibility. Regardless of the diagnosis or progression, we will always provide a program that is challenging but appropriate for each individual. And, because we have been trained in fitness for PD, we also understand and are focused on not only the movement but also the non-movement difficulties that may be presented in a training session and can quickly respond to safely work through them. Overall, we will handle the core of the fitness program as we do will every client - challenging with accountability and motivation at the core to help start strong and continue strong.

What about group training?

Group exercise can have benefits for individuals with Parkinson's disease such as creating a social setting that makes the exercise more fun and encourages them to continue. We love that this is a viable fitness option but we know that group training will not be for everyone. There are potential drawbacks to the group fitness setting for clients with movement, neurological, or progressive disorders, including; increased anxiety, overcrowding, not enough support for participants who need it, and fall risks for self and others. An excellent fitness alternative that has worked for many PD patients is our private setting working with our team of certified personal trainers.

Currently, there is no known cure for PD, but there are a number of treatments that help to manage and minimize symptoms. One of these treatments is regular exercise. At FT, we are equipped, trained, and have the expertise to safely work with you as we fight together to achieve a normal, active lifestyle!
